Background. COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 and is currently causing a worldwide pandemic. Diabetes mellitus is one of the most frequent comorbid in severe COVID-19. Patients with comorbid diabetes mellitus are more at risk for hypercoagulable conditions characterized by an increase in D-dimer levels. Objective. This study aims to find out the comparison of D-dimer levels in COVID-19 patients with diabetes mellitus and without diabetes mellitus at Rumah Sakit Universitas Sumatera Utara in 2021. Method. This research is a descriptive analytic study using observational method with a cross sectional design. The data used are secondary data obtained from medical records at Rumah Sakit Universitas Sumatera Utara. Samples were divided into groups with diabetes mellitus and without diabetes mellitus Results. In this study, the D-dimer level in patients with diabetes mellitus was 1673.04 ng/mL while in patients without diabetes mellitus was 408.06 ng/mL. Patients with diabetes mellitus have significantly higher levels of D-dimer Conclusion. This study shows that there is difference in D-dimer levels in COVID-19 patients with diabetes mellitus and without diabetes mellitus. D-dimer levels in patients with diabetes mellitus were significantly higher than in patients without diabetes mellitus.
