dc.description.abstractBackground. Cockroaches are known to be vectors of various pathogens, one of which is intestinal parasites. Parasitic infection can cause symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders, which can affect the sufferer's quality of life. Objective.The purpose of this study was to determine the density of cockroaches, symptomps of gastrointestinal disorders in the community, and the relation between cockroach density and gastrointestinal disorder symptomps. Methods. This is an observational analytic research. The population and sample for this study came from the people of the Helvetia Deli Serdang Sub-District as many as 100 respondents and houses that met the slum criteria, which were a supporting factor for the development of vectors. Cockroaches from the area were examined in the laboratory. Results. Based on researcher observation, 96 houses (96%) were not crowded with cockroaches, 4 houses (4%) had no cockroaches, and no houses that were full of cockroaches. 41 respondents (41%) had experienced gastrointestinal disorders and 59 respondents (59%) never experienced it. The analysis was carried out using the Fisher test method that there was no relation between cockroach density and digestive tract disorders with p value = 0.079 ( p> 0.05). Low level of cockroach density were found in the area. Based on the laboratory examination, there were hookworm rhabditiform larvae parasites as many as 22 (21.78%), 5 hookworm eggs (4.95%), 1 Oxyuris vermicularis egg (0.99%), Toxocara sp. egg (0.99%), and 1 Entamoeba histolitica cyst (0.99%). Conclusion. Based on these results, there is no relation between cockroach density and gastrointestinal disorders.en_US
