Background: Inappropriate infant feeding practices can lead to nutrient
deficiency and growth impairment in children. Nutritional problems of infants
and young children are closely related to poor feeding practices. Feeding
index is important in measuring the infant's diet quality and establish their
relations with child nutritional status. Feeding index constructed on brief
recalls of breastfeeding, feeding frequency and food diversification to provide
the quality of child feeding practices. ~
Objective:To determine the association between child feeding index and
nutritional status in children
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among children aged 6 to
17 months between February and March 2013 in Padang Lawas, North
Sumatera . A structured interview was used elicit feeding practice information
from their mothers. Child feeding practices were evaluated using feeding
index scoring. Body weight and body lenght were measured to assess
nutritional status. Classification of nutritional status based on WHO Z-score.
The association were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis, Chi-square and
Kolmogorov-Smirnov analysis.
Result: Of 193 children enrolled to the study including 95 boys and 98 girls.
In the study there was association between feeding index and the
anthropometric nutritional status (P<0.001). There was association in quality
of feeding practice based and age (P= 0.03). There was no association
between maternal education and nutritional status (P >0.05)
Conclusion: Feeding index is associated with nutritional status in
children. There is association between children's age and the quality of
feeding practices . Maternal education are not associated with nutritional
status in children
