Background. Obesity is a risk factor for non-communicable diseases which is the main cause of death in the world these day. Busy daily routines cause medical students tend to have poor sleep patterns. Several studies have stated that sleep quality could affect a person's body mass index. Poor sleep quality increase the risk of obesity which could reduce physical activity, increase eating opportunities, and affect the body's hormonal processes which can increase food intake. Aim. To analyze the relationship between sleep quality and obesity in medical students of University of North Sumatra in 2022. Methods. This research is an analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The population in this study were medical students of University of North Sumatra, class of 2019-2022 where the samples were taken using the consecutive sampling method. Sleep quality of the respondents were obtained from PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) questionnaire and informations regarding their weight and height were obtained from the respondents. Results. 106 students participated as respondents. Data shown that there are 52 people had good sleep quality and 54 students had poor sleep quality, 38 students were obese and 68 were not. The data were analyzed using the Spearman-rho test. The p value is 0.022 (p <0.05) which indicates that there is a significant relationship between sleep quality and obesity in medical students of University of North Sumatra in 2022. Conclusion. There is a significant relationship between sleep quality and obesity.
