dc.description.abstract | Intensive care is a type of service in the intensive care providing care for patients with potentially reversible severe disease and critical illness and is not limited to deal with post surgical patients, adult and pediatric patients who experienced more than one dysfunction (organ failure) or any organ damage, reduces morbidity and mortality that require close observation with or without treatment which can not be given in the general ward. In managing the nursing care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), role of the head nurse is very influential on the success of nursing care. The purpose of this study was to explore the phenomenon of experience of the head nurse in managing nursing care in the ICU ward of government hospital in Medan city. This type of research is a qualitative with descriptive phenomenological design. Participants in this study are the head nurse working in the ICU. The selection of participants was done by purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through in-depth interviews of the twelve head nurses consisting of seven people from Dr. Pirngadi Medan General Hospital and five people from H. Adam Malik Medan General Hospital. Data were analyzed using Colaizi analysis technique. This study found four major themes of the experience of the head nurse in managing nursing care is how to manage the conflict, perform invasive procedure to emergency patients, organize and coordinate with various parties. Role and responsibility of the head nurse is greatly affect the success of the services that the head nurse must be able to manage the conflict, perform emergency procedure to critical patients and organize all activities in the ward and coordinate with various parties. It is expected that the hospital management to make improvements to human resources and facilities which is necessary so that the nursing care in the ICU could be better. | en_US |
