This study aims to determine the variation of soil carbon content in various mangrove vegetation in Pasar Rawa Village, Gebang District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatera. This research was conducted from March 2022 to September 2022 in Pasar Rawa Village, Gebang District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra and Socfindo Laboratory. This study used a non-factorial randomized block design with the following vegetation: Nypa fruticans, Aegiceras corniculatum, Sonneratia alba, Rhizophora apiculata and Acrostichum aureum at a depth of 10 cm and 30 cm with 5 sampling points on each vegetation with a total of 60 soil samples. The parameters observed were Soil Carbon, Soil Bulk Density, and Soil Organic Carbon.
The results of this study showed that soil carbon is higher at 30 cm depth than at 10 cm depth where the highest is found in Rhizophora apiculata vegetation and it is significantly different from soil carbon in other vegetation at both 10 cm and 30 cm sample, followed by Acrostichum aureum, Sonneratia alba, Aegiceras corniculatum and Nypa fruticans. The vegetation of Rhizophora apiculata has potential in soil carbon sequestration because it has supporting roots that are able to trap sediments so that the amount of soil carbon is significantly higher compared to other vegetation in order to increase carbon sequestration in soil to reduce the amount of carbon in atmosphere.
