Background. Dry eye syndrome is a multifactorial disease that can trigger a decrease in the production of eye fluids, this is due to changes in the epithelial surface so that it shows a decrease in tear production and sensitivity of the eye surface caused by the appearance of various inflammatory responses.Aim. To analyze the risk factors that can cause the occurrence of dry eye syndrome in colleger of FK USU. Method. The method used in this study was analytic observational with a cross-sectional design regarding the risk factors for the incidence of dry eye syndrome in FK USU students in 2019, 2020 and 2021 as a population and 88 as a study sample. Research data collection was carried out using a g-form containing the OSDI questionnaire and risk factor questions. Results. The results showed that there was a relationship between dry eye syndrome and smartphone exposure duration ≥ 8 hours per day through the chi- square test with a p value of p = 0,001 (<0,05). And also there is a relationship between dry eye syndrome and the duration of exposure to AC > 6 hours per day through the chi-square test with p = <0,001 (<0,05). However, there was no relationship between exposure to cigarette smoke in active smokers and the occurrence of dry eye syndrome in college in FK USU through chi-square test p = 0,367 (<0,05). Conclusion. Environmental factors can influence the occurrence of dry eye syndrome, therefore you should be more aware of minimizing exposure to risk factors such as using a smartphone and also being in an air-conditioned room.en_US
