This study aims to know the communication process, which occurs in the interpersonal relationship of husband and wife, the obstacles/disruption that faced by husband and wife in communicating and the quality of communication of husband wife spouse as effort to keep the family harmony. The subjects of this study are the families in the Tanjung Pinggir village, Siantar Martoba district, Pematangsiantar Municipality. The number of the subject there are six pairs of husband and wife spouse. The sampling use accidental technique with the subject characteristics, they are; (1) the family who never get divorce or is going to divorce, (2) the families who continuously live in efforts to stay in harmony, and (3) the families who have offspring. The paradigm used in this study is the constructivist with theories that support or relevant as the process of Interpersonal communication; interpersonal communication barriers; aspects of the quality of communication, communication theory of conflict; exchange theory affection; the theory of self-disclosure; attachment theory; and the interpersonal deception theory. The methodology is the study case and the collecting data method by making observation, indepth interview, recording and literature study The instrument that used to collect the data is tape recorder and interviewing list question. The technique to ensure the data validity use the study honest triangulation and the source triangulation, and the method that used to analyze the data used Bogdan and Biklen method. The result of the study are: all of the informants (husband and wife) have a process of interpersonal communication that is characterized by the exchange of information (exception third informant), always limit the topics you want discussed (an exception is the wife of the informant fourth), and reveal something undesirable from a couple for the goodness (the exception is the fifth informant husband); interpersonal communication barriers all informants consist of physical barriers, psychological and conflict; and the communication quality of all informants consisted of openness, empathy, being supportive, positive attitude, honesty, and equality. The third and fourth informant does not have a supportive attitude aspect.
