    Abstract
    Background. Herbal medicine is part of traditional medicine which has a long history. Traditional medicine is made up of knowledge, skills, and practices based on the theories, beliefs and experiences of different cultures. It is estimated that 60% of the world's population depends on herbal medicines for primary health care needs and 80% of the population in developing countries use herbal medicines for primary health care. This research was conducted to determine the level of knowledge of medical students from Universitas Sumatera Utara about herbal medicine and its benefits in Medan, Indonesia. Aim. To find out the description of the level of knowledge of students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatera (USU) about the classification of herbal medicines in Indonesia. Methods. This type of research is an observational descriptive study with a cross-sectional study design. Results. According to the research analysis, it is shown that medical students from higher batches are more knowledgeable about herbal medicine whereas a very small number of students from lower batches are aware of Herbal medicine. 2019 has 60 students who have very good knowledge but only 50 had very good knowledge meanwhile had 22 students with average knowledge about it. Conclusion. In conclusion, the frequency of a respondent's level of knowledge can be determined by the class of respondents. According to the researcher's analysis, the class of 2019 has the most respondents with good knowledge, namely 60 respondents (83.3%), while the class of 2022 has fewer respondents with good knowledge (69.4%) but more respondents with moderate knowledge, namely 22 respondents. (30.6%) compared to 2019, 2020 and, 2022 batches.
