The use of chitosan and its derivative for Ni(II) and Cr(III) metal ions absorption in aquatic system using solid phase extraction has been studied. The chitosan was obtained from chitin produced by wet chemical process using prawn cell as raw material. The yield of chitin production was 30.6% and that of chitosan was 71.8%. The chitosan was characterized before use as coating.
There are two methods of using the chitosan:
1. The chitosan as linear polymer was coated on silica gel and fiber glass filter
for absorption of Ni(II) and Cr(III) ions in solid phase extraction. The amount of Ni(II) ion absorb was 86.60% and that of Cr(III) ion was 87.20% for fibre glass filter. Ni(II) ion absorb was 97.10% and that of Cr(III) 98.20%. 2. The chitosan of linear polymer chain was reacted with glutaraldehyde to form cross linked glutaraldehyde-chitosan. Formation of the cross linking enabling the N atom to have more electron pairs than that of linear chitosan, as well as producing larger surface area. This then improved efficiency of the polymer in metal ion absorption to maximum of 99.70% and their recovery up to 99.70% with flow rate 1 ml/minut and pH 7 for both Ni(II) and Cr(III) ions.
Originality of this research is reported that absorption of the Ni(II) and Cr(III) ions by linear chain chitosan can be improved when the chitosan is reacted with glutaraldehyde. Formation of cross linking structure of glutaraldehyde-chitosan is revealed to give more electron pairs on the N atom and increase on the surface area as well as better stability in acid solution.
