Background. Indonesian is a tropical country where malaria is still a health
problem. There are 70 million people in Indonesian at risk of malaria. Central
Bureau of Statistics for North Sumatra Province reported 2,575 cases of malaria.
Malaria has occurred in various groups at risk with high incidence rates in endemic
countries. Aim. To identify the features of malaria in two of major hospitals in
Medan, North Sumatera, i.e., Prof. Dr. H. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis Hospital
and Haji Adam Malik Hospital during 2017-2021. Methods. This study used
secondary data from medical records of malaria patients in both hospitals from
2017 to 2021. This research was a descriptive retrospective design using total
sampling method. Results. Based on the inclusion criteria, 32 samples were
obtained. Variables are processed, presented in frequency distribution table.
Conclusion. Largest age range is found in the early adult group (37.5%), with the
highest gender is male (78.1%) and civil servants (31.3%). Based on the origin of
residence, of the two research locations were from Medan City and outside Medan
City with the same proportion is 50% each. The most clinical symptoms is
fluctuating fever accompanied by chills (53.1%), with the most common cause is
Plasmodium falciparum (75%). Based on the degree of severity, 93.8% of malaria
sufferers experience mild malaria. The most common therapies are DHP and
primaquine (87.5%).
