Background. North Sumatera Province and its capital; Medan, are dengue
endemic areas. Surveillance and observation of dengue patients’ characteristics
are mandatory to determine the development trends and impact of dengue. Aim.
The study aimed to determine the characteristics of dengue patients at Universitas
Sumatera Utara Hospital in 2020 to 2022. Method. This is a descriptive study with
cross-sectional design and total sampling method. Data derived from medical
record of dengue patients at Universitas Sumatera Utara Hospital from January
2020 to September 2022. Result. This study used data from 96 dengue patients with
equal number of cases between males and females. There were almost equal
numbers of cases in each group of dengue without and with warning signs; 50%
and 49%, respectively, and 1 (1%) patient with severe dengue. The majority of
patients were adults (49%), and cases from Medan typically came from Medan
Tuntungan District (13,8%). Most cases were recorded in September 2022 (19,3%).
Overweight and obese children ≤ 18 years tend to have dengue with warning signs.
Common clinical symptoms found were fever (100%), nausea (67,7%), and malaise
(59,4%). The majority of patients also had thrombocytopenia (72.9%) and
leukopenia (64,6%). Conclusion. Dengue without and with warning sign cases
registered with almost equal numbers in each group. Overweight and obese child
patients prone to have dengue with warning signs. Other major characteristics
found were cases from adults, Medan patients came from Medan Tuntungan
district, recorded in September 2022, experienced fever, nausea and malaise, and
laboratory results showed thrombocytopenia and leukopenia.
