Hubungan Tingkat Pengetahuan Tentang Epilepsi dengan Sikap terhadap Pertolongan Pertama Penderita Epilepsi pada Masyarakat Kelurahan Simpang Selayang Kota Medan

Abstract

Background. Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by neurobiological, cognitive, psychological and social consequences. Epileptic seizures can occur unexpectedly and anywhere. Consequently, appropriate first aid is required to safeguard the individual during a seizure. Objective. Aimed to evaluate the correlation between the level of knowledge about epilepsy and attitudes towards first aid to people with epilepsy in the community of Simpang Selayang Urban- Village, Medan City. Methods. This research is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional approach. The population of this study is the community of Simpang Selayang Urban-Village, Medan City and 100 samples were acquired using the consecutive sampling technique. The research instrument is a questionnaire. Results. The univariate research analysis revealed that the majority of respondents had adequate level of knowledge, as many as 56 people (56%) and the majority of respondents had a negative attitude, as many as 55 people (55%). Bivariate analysis using the chi-square test found a correlation between the dependent and the independent variables with p-value = 0.0001. Conclusion. There is a correlation between the level of knowledge about epilepsy and attitudes towards first aid to people with epilepsy.
