Heat cured acrylic resin (HCAR) denture base is the most popular dentures today.
The HCAR denture base is hydrophilic which is associated with porosity which will
cause discoloration that affects the color stability of the denture base. Discoloration of
dentures can be caused by extrinsic factors that came from exposure to dyes and the
level of acidity (pH) of drinks or food consumed by patients. The purpose of this study
was to determine the effect of immersion time of HCAR denture base in coffee, tea,
and herbal solutions on color stability. The sample in this study was a cylindrical
HCAR which diameter is 20 mm × 3 mm. Samples were soaked in a coffee, tea and
herbal solutions for 3, 5 and 7 days. Color change was measured using a
spectrophotometer. The data were analyzed by using the one-way ANOVA test. The
smallest x̄ ± SD values were found in samples soaked for 3 days, the coffee group 0.85
± 0.15; tea group 0.85 ± 0.17; and the herbal solutions group 0.90 ± 0.14. The highest
x̄ ± SD values were found in samples soaked for 7 days, the coffee group 0.90 ± 0.07;
tea group 0.94 ± 0.10; and the herbal solutions group 1.04 ± 0.10. The significance
value of the coffee group is p=0.727 (p>0.05), the tea group is p=0.691 (p>0.05), and
the herbal solutions group is p=1.61 (p>0.05). There was no significant effect of
immersion time in coffee, tea, and herbal solutions on color stability of the HCAR
denture base.
