Introduction : In the process of tooth movement, the deflection ability of fixed
orthodontic archwires is critical. Chemicals such as mouthwash can affect the
deflection of the archwire. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of
chlorhexidine mouthwash, chlorhexidine fluoride and chitosan on CuNiTi archwire
deflection in orthodontic treatment at different times.
Material and Method : Total of 72 samples, 4 mm CuNiTi archwires 0.016x0.025”
were used and immersed in artificial saliva (control group), 0.12% chlorhexidine,
chlorhexidine fluoride and 2% chitosan. Each group was divided into 3 immersion
times (2, 4 and 6 weeks). The mouthwash immersion time in treatment group was
carried out for 28 minutes, 56 minutes, and 84 minutes. The duration of immersion was
simulated with the patient's gargling time in 1 day, which was 2 x 1 minute. Deflection
was evaluated by using the three-point bending test method which was carried out by
applying a pressure of 5 mm at a speed of 1 mm/minute. One Way ANOVA and Post
Hoc tests were performed for data analysis.
Results : There was a significant difference in CuNiTi archwire deflection between
the treatment groups on the 6th weeks. There was a significant difference in
chlorhexidine fluoride and chitosan groups in terms of immersion time. No significant
differences was found between the control group and treatment group at each
immersion time.
Conclusion : Clorhexidin fluoride and chitosan immersion may affect archwire
CuNiTi unloading force, while chlorhexidine has no effect on it.
