    Abstract
    Pemena is the local religion of the Karo people before the spread of the teachings of Islam and Christianity in this nation. Pemena religion basically not much different form other religions in general. The adherents of the doctrine also has concepts such as understanding to belief in God called Dibata si mula jadi, have a holy book called pustaka najati, and believe in the spirit world. In this teachings, pemenas believe that if one man dies then his body will be returned to the ground, his blood back into the water, his breath became the wind and the soul back past the dwellers of the universe. Furthermore, the pemenas recognize the self-cleaning ritual. The ceremony is believed to purify the body and the soul. However, at the present time this ceremony is attached to self Karo society eventough they had embraced Islam or Christianity. So it is not suprising that people who have been dominant are Christian or Muslim sill perform the ceremony. In this ritual, there is a female shaman called guru sibaso who serves as the center of the ceremony. Shamans woman makes herself as a media between humans and the spirits. Liabilities of female shaman is not easy. They have to dance to entice the spirits and seducing spirits to enter the body of the shaman. In this case, the music became one of the important components for the ceremony. Instrumental music led herbalists to skip the pre trance, trance, trance and regained conciousness post. Music will be played starting from a slow tempo to a very fast tempo. The melody played repetition and experience the static and repetitive rhythm. Through music and dance, the shamans can move freely follow the melody and rhythm of the melody that ultimately shaman will lose concentration and will undergo a process of trancing. Here, it can be concluded that the role of shaman woman, music, and trance into a single unit which are interconnected to support the validity of the ritual.
