Based on topographic conditions in North Sumatra in the top five areas include:
East Coast, East Slope, Mountains, West Slope and West Coast. The data used are
monthly rainfall data of 12 rain posts in North Sumatra, ENSO Index and Dipole
Mode Index data period 1980-2009. Generally, rainfall in North Sumatra is
Equatorial type with peak of rain occurs in April-May and September-November.
Monthly average rainfall in North Sumatra ranges from 150-250 mm, the highest
rainfall occurs in the West Slope with rainfall ranged from 350-400 mm, while the
lowest rainfall occurred on the East Coast with rainfall ranged from 100-150 mm.
Spectral analysis of wavelet monthly rainfall in North Sumatra region generally
shows the influence of annual oscillation. El Nino and Dipole Mode Positive
conditions affect the annual rainfall reduction to 9%, while the condition (?l La
Nina affect the addition of annual rainfall up to 8%.
