Figures of speech in a language are usually strongly associated with its social
and culture, and therefore sometimes itis very difficult to be understood and be
translated into another language. The purpose of this study is to describe the
figurative language and its translation techniques. This study is qualitative
descriptive by applying the method of Miles and Huberman in analyzing the
data and the theoretical figures of speech that raised by Nyoman Kutha Ratna
and translation techniques offered by Molina, L & Albir, AH. The data in this
study are the words, phrases, clauses and sentences which are included to be the
figures of speech in novel Laskar Pelangi and its translated novel entitled The
Rainbow Troops. Data were collected through notes and selection techniques,
and then analyzing the results by comparing them with the translated ones into
the TT. After that analyzing the techniques used to translate the figures of
speech. Based on the results of the analysis: 1) the figures of speech found in
this study are: personifikasi, metafora, simile, hiperbola, antropomorfisme,
litotes, totum pro parte, alusio, sinestasia, eufemism, Parabel, aptronim,
perifrasa, disfemisme, antonomasia, pars pro toto, hipokorisme, antifrasis,
Sinisme, sarkasme, innuendo, zeugma, retoris, ekskalamasio, arkhaisme,
aposiopesis, apofasis, epifora, asindenton, tautotes, mesodiplosis, epizeuksis,
interupsi, paradoks, anakronisme, Kontradiksi interminus, 2) While the
translation techniques used in translating the figures of speech are: literal
translation, transposition, compensation, addition, modulation, equivalence,
generalization, reduction, and borrowing. 3) Some figures of speech such as
pararima, alonim, anaphora, and tautology cannot be translated into TT
because of the stylistic and cultural elements contained in the ST.
