dc.description.abstractThe aims of this study are (1) to identify translation techniques applied in nganting manuk text translation, (2) to elaborate reason of applying the most dominant translation technique in nganting manuk text translation, and (3) to describe the quality of nganting manuk text translation in accuracy, acceptability, and readability aspect. This descriptive-qualitative research is an embedded-case study and oriented to translation product. The data consist of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences selected from nganting manuk text in Adat Karo book and its translation in English, and translation quality information gained from key informants. Data for this research were collected with document analysis, questionnaires, and analyzed using an interactive data analysis technique. The findings of this study show the followings. First, 10 translation techniques were applied in nganting manuk text translation including borrowing (95.6%), amplification (76.1 %), adaptation (50.7%), literal (39.4%), reduction (36.6%), established equivalent (28.2%), transposition (21.1%), modulation (19.7%), discursive creation (19.7%), generalization (5.64%), and the most dominant translation technique applied in nganting manuk text translation was borrowing. Second, the dominant use of borrowing technique was influenced of translator foreignization perspective that produced translation oriented to source text. Third, the quality of nganting manuk text translation is good enough, but it still needs improvement. The percentage of accuracy was 70.4%, acceptability 63.4%, and readability 66.1 %. One theoretical understanding and proposal for translation theory development was established that adding cultural information philosophy (CPI) to footnote of amplification technique will be able to make the target reader know the local wisdom of Karo tribe and understand the philosophy of nganting manuk text translation.en_US
