dc.description.abstract | This research is intended to analyse the translational text structure in the bilingual biology textbook (Indonesian-English). The translational analysis of text structure is comprised of identifying (1) the most absent type of cohesive device; (2) the types of thematic development applied in the translation of bilingual biology textbook; and (3) the way of text structure of target language text differs from text structure of source language text. Here, the applied theory in identification is of Halliday (1976). In addition to this theory, Bloor and Bloor's (I 995: 92-94) model of Derived theme pattern, Eggins' (2004: 324-325) statements on three main patterns (Theme reiteration, the zig-zag pattern, and the multiple-Rheme pattern) of Thematic development of a text and Saragih' (2007: 61-74) four of seven patterns (Theme-Rheme, Rheme-Theme, Rheme-Rheme, Theme-Rheme to Theme) of Thematic development are also applied. The result of study is that (1) conjunction (92%) is the most absent cohesive device, comprised of four absently types, they are additive relation (57%), adversative relation (12%), causal relation (19%), and temporal relation (12%); (2) there are eight types of Thematic development integrated as methods of development of bilingual biology textbook, they are theme reiteration (39%), derived theme (5%), zig-zag (10%), Theme-Rheme (5%), Rheme-Theme (17%), Rheme-Rheme (4%), and Theme-Rheme to Theme (1%); and (3) the way of text structure of TLT differs from text structure of SLT through 56 times ( 12%) shifts on TLT caused by shifts of seven Thematic development patterns of SLT to the different patterns of Thematic development of clauses of TLT such as theme reiteration pattern, the Rheme-Theme, the Theme-Rheme, the zig-zag, the multiple-Rheme, the Rheme-Rheme and the Theme-Rheme to Theme. | en_US |
