Background: More women delay pregnancy until the age of 35 years or older as the
improvement of education and employment for women, and the availability of
effective contraception. There is an increase in obstetric complications in pregnant
women aged 35 years and older.
Objective: To detennine the proportion of pregnancy complications and delivery
complications iri women aged 35 years and older
Methods: This descriptive study with a retrospective approach, is carried out in the
Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology H.Adam Malik and Dr.Pimgadi Hospital
in Medan. Total sampling is used, which means taking data of the entire medical
records of women who met the inclusion criteria listed in the medical records
department of H.Adam Malik and dr Pimgadi Hospital Medan during January 2009
until December 2010, then recorded complications of pregnancy and childbirth
complications encountered in sample.
Results : Complications of pregnancy most women aged 35 years and older in the
study were 37 cases of preeclampsia-eclampsia (14.4o/o) followed by placenta previa
23 cases (8.9%), whereas most delivery complications were malpresentation 23
cases (8.9%), followed by 13 cases of fetaldistress (5.1o/o).
Gonclusion: Pregnancy complications found higher in women aged >35 years old
were preeclampsia-eclampsia, and placenta previa, whereas higher delivery
complications in women aged >35 years old were malpresentation and fetal distress
