City development is identified by the rapid development which is the
realization of the functional development of the residents of Medan. But the city
development has brought about the decrease in the quality and the quantity of public
space. As we know, public space is joint tenancy, and one of the functions of public
space is pedestrian lane (sidewalk). Jalan Jamin Ginting is one of the main streets of
Medan which crowdedly used by street users, including pedestrians. As it is
dominated by students, this street, including its sidewalk, should reflect a functional
public space. Therefore, in order to create a pedestrian space on Jalan Jamin
Ginting as comfortable public space, it is necessary to conduct a study on the comfort
for pedestrians through physical and climate comfort. Physical comfort includes
accessibility, the width of the sidewalk, street furniture, vegetation, and other
elements. Climate comfort includes temperature and humidity. Pedestrians'
satisfaction was obtained through descriptive method which is expected to satisfy
them, viewed from the factors of its physical and climate comfort. The result of the
research showed that existing condition and the available supporting facilities in
supporting pedestrians' comfort on Jalan Jamin Ginting was in the category of
inconvenience. Viewed from the aspect of climate comfort, it lacked of shading, while
viewed from physical comfort, it was inconvenient because of a lot of constraint on
the road surface as the parking place. It is recommended that the micro climate
should be modified by constructing shelters of planting trees so that they will provide
shades and physical comfort and will eventually provide smooth flow, convenience,
and accessibility for the space users in their work The space users actually want the
hardening of sidewalk which does not disturb work activities, while street equipment
and street furniture and the laying down of its utility strand should facilitate the
users' mobility on pedestrian lane.
