    Abstract
Traumatic ulcer due to the use of fixed orthodontic appliances requires control to the dentist to eliminate the main etiology of the ulcer, but during the COVID-19 pandemic many patients postponed their visit to the dentist worry of contracting cross-infection of COVID-19. This research was a descriptive research using a cross-sectional approach with the aim of knowing the prevalence of traumatic ulcers in users of fixed orthodontic appliances before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research was conducted at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of North Sumatra, September to November 2022. The population was dental students 2018 to 2021 who used fixed orthodontics appliances. Sampling was carried out using purposive sampling technique with reference to the Slovin formula in order to obtain a total sample of 33 respondents. Data was obtained based on the answers to each questions submitted to respondents through online surveys/questionsnaires which were then processed through several stages such as editing, coding, data entry, tabulation, and data cleaning. The collected data were analyzed with Univariate Test. The results of the analysis using univariate tests showed that the prevalence of traumatic ulcers at users of fixed orthodontic appliances before the COVID-19 pandemic was 90.9%, however the prevalence during the COVID-19 pandemic was known to be 97%. The prevalence percentage during the COVID-19 pandemic had increased by 6.1% compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the result of the study it can be concluded that there is a significant increase in the prevalence of traumatic ulcers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
