| dc.description.abstract | Streptococcus mutans is the main pathogenic bacteria that causes caries and is also found in plaque, to prevent colonization, control efforts can be made with the use of antibacterials. One of the natural ingredients from plants that have the potential as an antibacterial is red dragon fruit, 30-35% of the total part of the red dragon fruit is the skin part which is rarely used but only as waste. Antibacterial active compounds in dragon fruit peel flavonoids, alkaloids, tanins, terpenoids, and saponins function to damage bacterial cells through the process of denaturing bacterial cell proteins, causing increased cell membrane permeability and disrupting the stability of Streptococcus mutans cells as a result of bacterial cell lysis. The aim of the study was to determine the inhibition zone, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentrartion (MBC) of red dragon fruit peel extract on the growth of Streptococcus mutans causing dental caries (in vitro) using a concentration of 6.25%, 12, 5%, 25%, 50%, and 100%. Chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% positive control and DMSO negative control. Laboratory experimental research method with post test only control group design with 4 repetitions, parametric Oneway Anova test was carried out to determine the effectiveness of red dragon fruit peel extract (Hylocereus polyrhizus) with a significance value of 0.05. The results of the study mean the diameter of the inhibition zone of red dragon fruit peel extract (Hylocereus polyrhizus) at concentrations of 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50% and 100% were 0mm, 10.50mm, 13.50mm, 23 .25mm, and 27.31mm. The value of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) is 12.5% and the value of the Minimum Bactericidal Concentrartion (MBC) is 50%. In conclusion Increasing the concentration of the extract will increase the content of antibacterial bioactive compounds of red dragon fruit peel extract on the growth of Streptococcus mutans ATCC® 25175™. | en_US |
