dc.description.abstractMangroves are one of the complex ecosystems consisting of flora and fauna of coastal areas which are influenced by tides. Indonesia has the largest mangrove forest in the world with an area of about 3.2 million ha which is 22.6% of the world's total mangroveforest. Mangroveforest on the east coast of North Sumatra in nearly 30 years has lost more than 60,000 ha of mangrove forest. Medan Belawan subdistrict is one of the subdistricts in Medan City which has a mangrove forest area and is located on the east coast of North Sumatra. The purpose of the study was to obtain information on the distribution and presence ofmangrove forests in Medan Belawan subdistrict, Medan City. This study use the maximum likelihood classification method. The results of this study found 4 types of land cover, namely mangroves with an area of 1246.82 Ha, water bodies 295.83 Ha, built up land 1050.05 Ha, and ponds 415.19 Ha. From the classification results, it is known tha the identified mangrove forest in Medan Belawan subdistrict is 1246.82 Ha.en_US
