Background. According to the Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 36 of 2009 concerning health, article 117: "A person is declared dead if the function of the heart, circulation and respiratory system is proven to have stopped permanently, or if brain stem death has been proven". Traumatology is the study of wounds and injuries and their relationship to violence. Bruises are included in the scope of learning in traumatology. Thanatology is one part of Forensic Medicine that studies death and the changes that occur after death and the factors that influence these changes. A doctor often finds it difficult to diagnose whether someone has died or not. The importance of this learning is to know and avoid mistakes in determining the diagnosis of what happened to corpses or people who are still alive. Purpose. The general purpose of this study was to describe the level of knowledge of USU Medical Faculty Pre-Clinical Students regarding the differences between bruises and bruising. Methods. This study uses a random sampling type of research because the selection is random, then asks for informed consent to the selected respondents by providing a questionnaire that has been tested for validity and reliability. The data obtained will be tested descriptively using the SPSS chi-square univariate method. Results. Research conducted by researchers on pre-clinical students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra, yielded insufficient results, the lack of knowledge of medical students on the differences in bruises and bruises on corpses can be caused by inadequate forensic education provided so that the curriculum regarding forensic and medicolegal lessons is highly recommended to be re-evaluated . Conclusion. There is a gap in the knowledge of pre-clinical students about the difference between bruises and bruises on a corpse.
