Studi Fenomenologi : Koping dan Harapan Pasien Kanker Payudara di Rumah Sakit Umum Pusat (RSUP) Haji Adam Malik Medan

Abstract

In general breast cancer sufferers will experience fear, worry and frustration when they are diagnosed as breast cancer survivors, before and after surgery and when undergoing other treatments. The objective of this research is to explore in depth the coping and expectations of breast cancer patients. This research uses a descriptive phenomenology design. Total number in the research is 10 participants who are selected by the purposive sampling technique. The data are collected with in-depth interview method. The data obtained are analyzed using the Colaizzi approach. The research results find 7 themes, namely 4 themes related to participant coping namely: 1) Inability to self-control, 2) Denial of Disease, 3) Performing spiritual activities, and 4) Finding solutions for the illness. While the 3 themes of expectation of the participants are: 1) Recovery from illness, 2) Getting good service, and 3) Getting support. Based on the research results, psychological problems that arise after being diagnosed and during treatment are considered burdensome for breast cancer patients, patients have adaptive and maladaptive individual coping and the average participant uses emotion focused coping to overcome the problem. All participants have hope for a quick recovery. For this reason, the provision of nursing education related to treatment side effects, treatment planning and information about things that may occur during treatment needs to be emphasized so that patients are able to prepare physically and mentally in completing the treatment.
