| dc.description.abstract | During sepsis, serum cortisol level tends to increase, and this increase is
associated with increased of mortality. However increased levels of plasma
cortisol is not enough to control the inflammatory response, which is also known
as adrenal insufficiency relative. Cortisol level is a good predictor of outcome in
sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock state, there is a positive correlation between
serum cortisol level and sepsis severity level.
Objective:
To evaluate serum cortisol level in sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock patients.
Materials and Methods :
This was a cross-sectional study. Sepsis upheld based on SIRS plus blood culture
and procalcitonin, and also the sepsis severity level. Nest serum cortisol is
associated with the sepsis severity level and other parameters, to be meaningful
when p < 0,05.
Result:
Total 28 subjects consist of 13 patients with sepsis, 12 patients with severe sepsis
and 3 patients septic shock. Spearman correlation obtained a positive linier
correlation that significant (p< 0.0001). However, in this study did not find a
significant different between the mean frequency of heart, respiratory rate,
temperature, leucocytes and procalcitonin with sepsis severity level (p> 0.05).
Conclusion :
Serum cortisol is associated with the sepsis severity level, so cortisol serum can be
used to determine the prognosis of sepsis patients | en_US |
