The rapid increase of urban population will automatically increase the
people's socio-economical activities so that the need for space also increases rapidly,
not only the space for residence but also for other socio-economical activities. The
need for urban space is increasing (demand side), while the availability of space
(supply side) is limited. Although they are very limited, the number of spaces can be
added, such as building the vertical construction and creating multipurpose spaces
(residences and socio-economic activities in one place). The result of this urban
population development will cause urban .functions to spread into the suburban area.
In other words, the urban physical appearance will move outside. This process of
development is called "urban sprawl. " There are some definitions of urban sprawl,
and one of them is the area extension, including land conversion in the suburban area
by using non-urban land to become urban usage.
Deli Tua sub district, Deli Serdang District, is going through physical
development which leads to be urban .functions. Deli Tua as a sub district town
becomes the most developing area. The rapid physical urban development does not
only occur in the urban area but also in the suburbs. In order to evaluate whether the
process of urban sprawl had occurred at Deli Tua sub district, the researcher used
variables, indicators, and measurement in analyzing the data and information within
the last ten years (1998-2008). After the phenomena of urban sprawl had been
known, its influence on the spatial visualization of Deli Tua sub district was studied
through morphological analysis of the form of the town and the type of the sprawl of
its physical appearance. These stages became the input in determining its physical
area in the future.
The urban sprawl which occurred at Deli Tua sub district in the last ten years
has not changed its layout significantly. With its urban morphology in the form of
"ribbon" with the spread of its physical appearance in stretching form, the
appropriate spatial model of the town should be in "linear with beads" model with
the center o the town as its development core, equipped by some sub-service centers
in the north, the south, and the southwest.
