dc.description.abstract | Water soluble chitosan is effective as an antibacterial compared to natural chitosan,
because water-soluble chitosan has a high degree of deacetylation (DD) and a low
MW. The higher the DD tends to have bacterial activity, especially bacteria that are
harmful to humans. This study aims to formulate a mouthwash preparation of
citronella ethanol extract with the addition of chitosan and water soluble chitosan
solutions and to test the stability and evaluation of the preparation. The citronella
ethanol extract was prepared by maceration, then the citronella ethanol extract was
formulated in a mouthwash whose formula consisted of citronella ethanol extract
with a concentration of 0.5%, chitosan and 0.5% water soluble chitosan with various
concentrations of chitosan and water soluble chitosan 1 %, 1.5% and 2%, sodium
benzoate, sodium laurite sulfate, sorbitol, glycerin, peppermint oil and distilled
water. Evaluation of the preparations included organoleptic tests, pH tests, viscosity
tests and antibacterial activity tests. The highest pH values for mouthwash
preparations with the addition of chitosan for four weeks were 5.20, 5.21 and 5.23
and the pH values for mouthwash preparations with the addition of water-soluble
chitosan were 5.13, 5.15 and 5.16. Viscosity values with the addition of chitosan
were 2.70 mPa.s, 2.69 mPa.s and 2.80 mPa.s while the results of viscosity
measurements with the addition of water soluble chitosan were 2.7 mPa.s, 2.68
mPa.s and 2.8 mPa.s. and mouthwash preparations have effective antibacterial
activity against Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguinis bacteria.
