    Abstract
One way to reduce the risk of caries in fixed orthodontic patients is to use mouthwash. The nickel titanium wire in the oral cavity will contact with all the elements in the oral cavity, especially saliva, which affects the metal properties of the orthodontic wire. The wire in the oral cavity undergoes a corrosion process that results in the detachment of the metal elements that make up the wire. The purpose of this study was to determine the corrosion rate of nickel titanium orthodontic wire that immersed in artificial saliva, chlorhexidine 0.2%, and Piper betle leaf (Piper betle Linn) extract for 1, 7, and 14 days. This study is a laboratory experimental study. The sample of this study was a nickel titanium orthodontic wire with a diameter of 0.016 inches American orthodontic brand with a round section of 5 cm as many as 27 pieces immersed in 3 groups of immersing solution, namely artificial saliva, chlorhexidine 0.2%, and Piper betle leaf (Piper betle Linn) extract 10 mg/ml. Samples were put into the incubator (37oC) for 1, 7, and 14 days and then the corrosion rate was calculated by weight loss method. The results of the Kruskal-Wallis statistical test showed that there were significant differences in the 7th and 14th day immersion groups (p<0.05). Post-hoc Mann-Whitney test results showed significant differences on the 7th and 14th day between the groups of artificial saliva immersion-chlorhexidine 0.2%, artificial saliva- Piper betle leaf (Piper betle Linn), and chlorhexidine 0.2%- Piper betle leaf (Piper betle Linn) in conclusion, there is a big difference in the corrosion rate of nickel titanium orthodontic wire after immersion in artificial saliva, chlorhexidine mouthwash 0.2%, Piper betle leaf (Piper betle Linn) extract 10 mg/mL.
