Background. Cesarean deliveries are increasing worldwide and now contibute to as much 21% of all deliveries, it is estimated that 29% of all births will occur by caesarean section in 2030. In Indonesia, results from RISKESDAS (2018) show a cesarean delivery rate of 17.6% with the highest proportion in DKI Jakarta (31.1%), the lowest in Papua (3.3%) and for North Sumatra (22.9%) is ranked 3 out of 34 provinces. Objective. To know the characteristics of mothers giving birth by cesarean section at USU Medan Hospital in 2017-2021. Method. This research is a descriptive with cross sectional design. The population of this study were all medical records of mothers who had given birth by cesarean section, which is 721, 256 samples, and by using simple random sampling. Results. This study shows that the proportion of women giving birth by cesarean section based on the largest sociodemographics is at the age of 20-35 years 78.9%, 50.4% college graduates, 52.3% housewife work. The biggest medical obstetric factor in parity primipara 38.1%, delivery interval > 2 years 53.5%, no history of disease 93.8%, history of delivery by cesarean section 55.4%, medical indications 96.1%, history of previous SC 37.5%, malpresentation 9.4%. The largest hospital service with length of stay ≤ 3 days 58.2%, BPJS cost source 99.2%, 90.4% outpatient treatment. Conclusion. Pregnant women are advised to routinely check the condition of their pregnancy so that diseases or complications during pregnancy are identified more quickly and receive treatment according to the conditions of their pregnancy and it is recommended that future researchers conduct analytical research related to the factors that influence the occurrence of cesarean section.
