    Abstract
The aims of this study were to exploit the great potential of coal fly ash which contains a lot of silica, to determine the effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on precipitated silica based ceramic membranes from coal fly ash and polyethylene glycol, and to improve the performance of ceramic membranes in water filtration contain methylene blue dye with the addition of polyethylene glycol as a poreforming agent on ceramic membranes. In the process of making ceramic membranes, precipitated silica is made through the preparation of fly ash, extraction of sodium silicate solution from fly ash and the manufacture of precipitated silica. Then mixed silica precipitation, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) which is then poured into a mold in the form of a hose with a hose size of 5/8 inch, an inner diameter of 15 mm and a length of 5 cm until it begins to dry for the bottom and top layer of ceramic membrane, then heated to vaporize polyethylene glycol (PEG) and a pore is formed on the ceramic membrane. The ceramic membrane is used for methylene blue dye. The ceramic membranes produced showed that the thermal characteristics of the ceramic membranes in the condition before the furnace has a melting point/melting point (Peak) of 257.08 oC with the required energy of -331.06 mJ or equivalent to -79.09 mcal and the thermal characteristics of the ceramic membrane in the condition after the furnace has a melting point/ melting point (Peak) of 273.81 oC with the required energy of -196.23 mJ or the equivalent of -46.88 mcal. SEM analysis on ceramic membranes produces pores on the surface of ceramic membranes. The pores on the surface of the ceramic membrane are affected by the addition of polyethylene glycol based on the layer ratio. The porosity of the ceramic membrane increased due to the addition of PEG to the ceramic membrane which resulted in a larger number of pores. The use of ceramic membrane of fly ash precipitation silica for methylene blue dye filtration has good performance. It can be seen in the UV-Vis test on ceramic membranes that there is a decrease in the concentration of methylene blue dye from 15 ppm to 10.61 ppm after passing through the ceramic membrane.
