dc.description.abstractSaliva has an important role in maintaining the health of the oral cavity, maintaining the optimal pH of the oral cavity. Decreased salivary pH causes demineralization of enamel. Pineapple plants have benefits for the oral cavity, which can increase salivary secretion and have the enzyme bromelain which is found in many pineapple weevil which can inhibite bacteria so as to prevent caries. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of gargling the 20% and 40% pineapple weevil extract solutions towards flow rate, pH and total salivary protein. This research method is a quasi-experimental research with a pretest-posttest design with control group design. The population in this study were Faculty of Dentistry of USU students aged 18-22 years. Sampling used purposive sampling with inclusion and exclusion criteria. The sample was divided into 3 groups and there were 10 subjects in each group. Saliva was collected before and after gargling with pineapple weevil extract solution. Salivary flow rate was measured by weighing the collected saliva divided by time, salivary pH was measured using a digital pH meter, total protein was measured using the PierceTM BCA Protein Assay Kit. The results showed that gargling the 20% and 40% pineapple weevil extract solutions has a significant effect on salivary flow rate and pH (p <0.05), while total protein has a significant effect only in the group gargling the 40% pineapple weevil extract solution, while in the group the 20% and aquades no significantly. The conclusion of this study is that gargling with pineapple weevil extract solution has a good effect on salivary flow rate and pH.en_US
