Background:Ulcer is an abnormal condition that generally has a picture of the epithelial
tissue being broken and damage to the underlying tissue so that it forms a yellowish-white
basin accompanied by an erythema halo when experiencing inflammation. The prevalence
of ulcers in the oral cavity reaches 15-30% and tends to be found in women aged 16-25
years. In Indonesia, many studies have investigated natural sources as complementary
materials in the wound healing process, one of which is red dragon fruit (Hylocereus
polyrhizus) which is reported to contain several compounds that have high antioxidant
activity. Objective:
Research methods:This research was conducted on 3 months old male wistar rats. Wistar
rats were divided into groups I to group IX treatment. Group I consisted of rats that
received 1.9% red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) peel extract gel treatment, then
were sacrificed on the 4th day. Group II consisted of rats that received 3.2% red dragon
fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) peel extract gel treatment, then were sacrificed on the 4th
day. Group III consisted of rats that received 7.5% red dragon fruit (Hylocereus
polyrhizus) peel extract gel treatment, then sacrificed on day 4. Group IV consisted of rats
that received Aloclair gel treatment (positive control), then were sacrificed on day 4.
Group V consisted of rats that received base gel treatment (negative control), then were
sacrificed on the 4th day. Group VI consisted of rats that received 1.9% red dragon fruit
(Hylocereus polyrhizus) peel extract gel treatment, then were sacrificed on the 7th day.
Group VII consisted of rats that received 3.2% red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus)
peel extract gel treatment, then sacrificed on the 7th day.
Results:The results of this study indicate that the antioxidant activity of dragon fruit peel
(Hylocereus polyrhyzus) has an average IC50 value of 140.793 ppm, which is in the
moderate category. The results of statistical analysis showed that all treatment groups
showed a significant decrease in ulcer diameter from day 4 to day 7 (p<0.05). The
statistical test results showed that on day 4, there was a significant difference in the mean
number of fibroblasts between all treatment groups, except between groups III and IV
(p>0.05). Meanwhile, on day 7, there was a significant difference in the mean number of
fibroblasts between all treatment groups, except between groups VII and VIII (p>0.05).
Meanwhile on the 7th day, red dragon fruit peel extract 3.2% and 7,
Conclusion:Red dragon fruit peel extract (Hylocereus polyrhizus) has antioxidant activity
which affects the proliferation of fibroblasts in the healing process of ulcers in the oral
cavity.
