    Abstract
The orthodontic bracket is one of the main components in fixed orthodontic treatment which is used to deliver the necessary force from the activated archwire to the teeth to facilitate tooth movement. Stainless steel orthodontic brackets are widely used because it has properties that are close to ideal; its suitable physical properties, relatively low cost, and a high resistance against corrosion. However, in a relatively long period of time in orthodontic treatment procedures, brackets can experience corrosion. The Butterfly Pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) is known to contain antioxidants that can play a role in inhibiting the corrosion process. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the butterfly pea flower extract (Clitoria ternatea L.) in inhibiting the release of iron ions from orthodontic brackets. The research method used in this study is experimental laboratory with post-test only control group design. The sample in this study were orthodontic brackets of the mini diamond type premolars of the Ormco brand, totaling 45 brackets which were immersed in five groups. Each group amounted to nine samples. The control group was immersed in artificial saliva and the treatment group was artificial saliva plus butterfly pea flower extract with concentrations of 250 ppm, 500 ppm, 750 ppm and 1000 ppm. The brackets were then soaked and placed in an incubator for 7, 14 and 28 days. The release of iron ions were measures using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICPOES). The results showed that there was a significant difference in the mean release of iron ions from the butterfly pea flower extract and the amount of iron ions released decreased from day 7 to day 28 (p<0.05). From these results, it can be stated that the extract of the butterfly pea flower is effective in inhibiting the release of iron ions from the orthodontic bracket.
