    Abstract
Profenofos an organophosphate class of pesticide that are often used to protect chilies and tomatoes from pests, which will leave residues on crop. The purpose of study was to determine residue levels of pesticide in chilies and tomatoes, to determine the effect of washing on pesticide residues in chilies and tomatoes as well as to determine the most effective method of removing pesticide residues. Methods of washing were done was soaking in water, soaking in warm water, wash with running water, and soaking in a soap solution of washing fruit and vegetables each performed for 15 minutes. Chilies and tomatoes that had been treated, extracted and their profenofos residue levels to determined by a gas chromatograph equipped with a flame photometric detector (GC-FPD). Samples of chilies and tomatoes are used in this study were obtained directly from farmers in Tanjung Anom who sprayed one day before harvest. The results of study indicated that chilies has not been washed containing profenofos residue of 1.4809 mg/kg, which was still below the maximum limits for profenofos residue is allowed, while tomatoes contain residues of profenofos residues that exceed the maximum residue limits of 7.9223 mg/kg. All of the treatment effect on the reduction profenofos residues chilies and tomatoes. Profenofos residues in chilies after soaking in water, soaking in warm water, wash with running water and soaking with a soap solution of washing fruit and vegetables decreased to 35.37, 35.39, 60.10, and 38.22%, respectively, while in tomatoes respectively is 14.87, 46.90, 76.44 and 62.82%. Method of washing with running water was the most effective to reduced profenofos residues in chilies and tomatoes, with interval confidence 95% and p-value < 0.05
