dc.description.abstract | One of the vital components included on a train as the vehicle is brake.
Brake serves as a tool to adjust the vehicle speed control, especially to reduce and
stop the vehicle. Metal matrix composites of Al-SiC (Al-SiC MMC) using
aluminum as the matrix and SiC particles as a reinforcement. Aluminum is heated
to the melting point, and then mixed with SiC powder, then poured into a mold.
Aluminum matrix composite materials with SiC ceramic amplifier or called
isotropic Al-SiC composite is a combination that fits in improving mechanical
performance and durability in corrosive damage. As for the selection of metal Al
as matrix metal because it has a specific gravity that light so it can be used as a
substitute for the manufacture of brake components train. This study only in
limiting the amount of mixing of Al-82% by 18% SiC, which aims to seek and
obtain alternative materials train brake better than cast iron materials in use today.
Tests done is test hardness, wear, and tensile test in lieu of cast iron railway brake
materials. From the test results showed that the optimum conditions obtained at
the composition of 18% SiC and sintering temperature of 600 °C with the
following characteristics: violence 88.96 HRB, wear 2.575 x 10-5 gram/mm2.s,
tensile strength 19.77 kgf/mm2. To obtain the synthesis of metal matrix composite
Al-SiC more research needs to be developed further with the composition of Al-
SiC is more variable again. | en_US |
