The people of Batu Ampar Village often have direct contact with coral reefs, resulting
in activities that have an impact on the coral reef ecosystem, either positively or negatively.
The use of coral reefs as building materials has had an adverse effect on the sustainability
of coral reefs. Massive use has side effectsfor fishermen who live in Batu Ampar Village,
making it difficult to find fish on the coast of Palmatak Island. The aim of this research is
to explain and describe the process of destroying and maintaining coral reefs by coastal
communities in Batu Ampar Village. Data were obtained using the In-Depth Interview
method, namely in-depth interviews in informal situations without any pressure on the
informants. Information was obtained using the Snowball method, namely collecting data
from many informants and then using the data to find the actual facts according to the
situation in the field. The results of the study revealed that the use of coral reefs had been
carried out for a long time and had negative effects on fishing communities. However,
with strict supervisors and the development of education in Batu Ampar Village, the
community has understood the importance of protecting the coral reef ecosystem, the
community has begun to protect the coral reef ecosystem, this can be seen from the use of
traditional fishing tools that do not damage nature and the use of clumps as fishing tools.
environmentally friendly fish.
