Crude glycerol, which is a by-product of biodiesel production, produces around 10% (w/w) of biodiesel by weight, and generally cannot be utilized optimally by the biodiesel-producing industry. This study aims to purify glycerol by acidification method using hydrochloric acid (HCl), extraction using ethanol and adsorption with Coconut Shell adsorbent as a substitute for activated carbon. This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Chemical Physics Chemical Engineering, University of North Sumatra, Medan. The experiment was started by acidification of glycerol using HCl with a variable mole ratio (n⁄n) of added acid (1:0.5; 1:1; 1:1.5; 1:2; 1:2.5), followed by extraction with ethanol solvent with variable volume ratio (v⁄v) of solvent (1:1) and continued adsorption with ratios of 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10%. The best purity results were obtained at a mole ratio (n⁄n) of acidification of 1:1, a ratio of volume (v⁄v) of solvent 1:1 and an extraction time of 60 minutes with a glycerol content of 97.615% with a density of 1.259 gr/ml, a water content of 2.676% , ash content 0.290% and MONG (Matter Organic non Glycerol) 2.068%.en_US
