This research focuses on the study of the negotiation of determining the amount of dowry (sinamot) in the type of mangain marriage, which is a marriage between an ethnic Toba groom and a woman from another ethnicity who does not have a clan name. This type of exogamous marriage for the Toba people becomes problematic when they marry other ethnic groups, apart from the Karo, Simalungun, Mandailing, Pakpak, and Angkola ethnicities. This research uses qualitative methods to produce ethnographic work. The data collection techniques used were participant-observation, literature study and in-depth interviews. The data analysis used is on going analyze, all data is made in field notes from the results of interviews with a number of raja parhata, parties who marry through mangain customs, parents of brides, village heads and traditional elders. Data obtained from informants is made in this paper in the form of verbatim. The results in this study show that in the toba custom, each region can be different from the customary procedures with other regions including in Simanindo District. The marhata sinamot process can take place after both sides of the family are present complete with elements of dalihan na tolu. The determination of the amount of sinamot may be influenced by several factors or criteria, namely the location of the wedding party, educational background, occupation and social status of the prospective bride's family. In the sinamot negotiation, both sides of the family will try to determine the amount of dowry that is considered appropriate to be agreed upon. The negotiation process in marhata sinamot can be deadlocked so that it causes conflict, if conflict occurs, those who mediate are respected parties such as natua-tua ni huta and also hula-hula from each party.en_US
