Abstract

Jabon is a type of local Indonesian plant that grows very fast (fast growing species) and can thrive in tropical forests. This study aims to analyze the mechanical properties of Jabon wood (Anthocephalus cadamba) 13 years old at the base, middle and tip. The mechanical properties tests performed included MOE, MOR, compressive strength parallel to the fibers, compressive strength perpendicular to the fibers, tensile strength parallel to the fibers, tensile strength perpendicular to the fibers, shear strength and hardness.Testing of mechanical properties refers to the standard BS 373 (1957) and ASTM D 143-94.The results of this study indicate that the values of MOE 64.450 kgf/cm2, MOR 568,32 kgf/cm2, compressive strength parallel to the fibers 271,89 kgf/cm2, compressive strength perpendicular to the fibers 50,66 kgf/cm2, tensile strength parallel to the fibers 655,92 kgf/cm2, tensile strength perpendicular to the fibers 20,28 kgf/cm2, shear strength 111,33 kgf/cm2, and hardness 272,35 kgf/cm2. The results of the data analysis showed that the treatment of the positions of the apex, middle and ends had a significant effect on the compressive strength values parallel to the fibers and hardness. Based on the results of this study, Jabon wood is included in the III-IV strength class which can be used for light to medium construction. Jabon wood can be used for various needs such as pulp and paper processing, children's toys, fruit crates, matches, shoe linings, and light construction materials, panel products and glued laminated lumber.
