This research is motivated by the phenomenon of the barista as a promising job amidst the increasing flow of coffee drinking culture in the city of Medan. The purpose of this research is the role of a barista in preserving coffee culture amidst the third wave of coffee which is rife with contemporary coffee. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews and using an interview guide with the snowball technique on several informants who became baristas. The informants also came from a variety of different backgrounds. The results of the study show that baristas have a very important role in preserving the culture of drinking coffee in the era of the third wave of coffee where currently people prefer contemporary coffee such as coffee with palm sugar milk than coffee in general. Field results also show that baristas are the spearhead in providing coffee connoisseurs with an understanding of coffee.en_US
