Dental caries is a disease with a high prevalence rate. A common cause of dental carries is the Streptococcus mutans bacteria. Batak leeks is reported in having antibacterial activity on several bacteries. The purpose of this research is to determine the antibacterial activity test of 70% ethanol extract of batak leeks (Allium chinense G.Don.) towards the Streptococcus mutans bacteria using the in vitro method.
The type of research conducted is a experimental laboratorium research with post test only group approach. The sample that was used in this research is the Streptococcus mutans ATCC® 25175™ bacteria and 70% ethanol extract of batak leeks that was diluted and two group control with three repetitions respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) in this research used the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method and to determine the minimum killing rate, the streaking method of the MIC determination test was used. Data analysis in this study used the Kruskal-Wallis test (p<0,05) followed by the Mann-Whitney test
Test results from the Antibacterial Activity Test reveals that Streptococcus mutans on 70% Ethanol Extract of Batak leeks have antibacterial activity properties capable of inhibiting the Streptococcus mutans bacteria with 70% Ethanol Extract of Batak leeksat concentration levels of 0,78% to 50% with the diameter of the inhibitory zone at 6,80±0,10 to 10,93±0,40. Bacteria killing effevtivenes at concentration levels of 0,78% to 50% is only capable of reducing bacteria as much as 63,15% until 89,86%.
In this study, concentration levels of 0,78 is determined as the MBC value and included in the medium category. MBC values was not found among the seven test extract
concentration that could reduce the number of initial colonies by 98%-99% because concentration levels of 50% could only reduce up to 89,86%. 70% Ethanol Extract of Batak leeks research reveals it doesn’t have high impact.
