Bleaching is a way to whiten or brighten teeth that have changed color. The
natural bleaching agent that has been studied for whitening teeth is Manalagi apple
because it contains malic acid. Manalagi apple contains 90% malic acid. The purpose
of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Manalagi apple extract gel (Malus
sylvestris) application against color changes and dental hardness at concentrations of
75%, 50% and 25%. The research method is laboratory experimental with pre-test posttest
control group design. Manalagi apple extract gel was prepared by maceration
extraction method.. Smearing was carried out for 8 hours on the entire surface of the
teeth, then the teeth were stored in artificial saliva in an incubator at 37°C. The
repetition of basting was carried out for 14 days. Data analysis was performed by
testing data normality using the Shapiro-Wilk test. To see the difference in color
change, the Kruskal Wallis test was carried out, followed by the Mann-Whitney test,
and the One Way Anova test was carried out for tooth hardness, followed by the Post
Hoc LSD test. To see changes in tooth hardness, a dependent T-Test was carried out.
The results showed that there was a significant change in tooth color after the
application of Manalagi apple extract gel 75% compared to the negative control and
positive control (p<0.05). The greatest change in tooth color occurred in the 75%
concentration group. There was a significant change in the value of tooth hardness after
the application of 75% Manalagi apple extract gel (p<0.05) without a decrease in tooth
hardness. It can be concluded that Manalagi apple extract gel has the potential to whiten
teeth.
