Efektivitas Obat Kumur Ekstrak Buah Asam Jawa (Tamarindus Indica L.) terhadap Pertumbuhan Bakteri Streptococcus Sanguinis secara In Vitro

Abstract

Gingivitis is caused by the accumulation of pathogenic plaque bacteria. Streptococcus sanguinis is the first bacterial colonization on the tooth surface and acts as a pioneer in plaque formation. Mouthwash is a chemical plaque control recommended for reducing plaque buildup, preventing gingivitis, and eliminating breath smell. Tamarind contains various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, and steroids so it has the potential to be used as a mouthwash. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of tamarind extract mouthwash against S. sanguinis ATCC®10556™ bacteria. This type of research is experimental laboratory research with a posttest control group design. The samples of this study were tamarind fruit extract mouthwash concentrations of 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, positive control (chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2%), and placebo mouthwash which each of them 4 repetitions. Data analysis used the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Mann-Whitney. The results of this study indicate that tamarind fruit extract mouthwash (Tamarindus indica L.) has effectiveness against S.sanguinis ATCC®10556™ at concentrations of 50%, 25%, and 12.5%.
