dc.description.abstractPlaque accumulation is a risk factor for caries and periodontal disease. Streptococcus sanguinis acts as a pioneer bacterium in the colonization of bacteria in the human oral cavity. In addition, these bacteria are also anchors for the attachment of other oral microorganisms which will later colonize the tooth surface to form dental plaque. Plaque control can be done mechanically through tooth brushing using toothpaste and chemically through the use of mouthwash. Andaliman fruit contains flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, and steroids. Essential oil is the main bioactive compound contained in Zanthoxylum achantopodium DC. One of the essential oils is used as an antibacterial compound. This study aims to determine differences in the effectiveness of toothpaste and mouthwash essential oil of Andaliman (Zanthoxylum achantopodium DC) in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus sanguinis bacteria. This type of research is a laboratory experimental research design with a post test only control group design. The samples for this study were toothpaste and mouthwash essential oil of Andaliman (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC) which were divided into 4 concentrations, namely 3.125%, 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, and control. Andaliman essential oil (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC) was taken by steam distillation method then to see the toothpaste inhibition zone was done by well diffusion method, while mouthwash with disc diffusion method. Data analysis used the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Mann-Whitney. The results of this study indicate that the essential oil mouthwash Andaliman (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC) with a concentration of 3.125%, 6.25%, 12.5%; and 25% had the inhibition against Streptococcus sanguinis bacteria with the greatest inhibition at a concentration of 25% of 11.62 mm and the smallest inhibition at a concentration of 3.125% of 8.45 mm, while Andaliman essential oil toothpaste (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC) had no inhibition against Streptococcus sanguinis bacteria.en_US
