Ekstrak Bunga Telang (Clitoria Ternatea L.) sebagai Alternatif Disclosing Agent untuk Identifikasi Dental Plaque

Abstract

The main etiology of periodontal disease is the accumulation of dental plaque that is colorless and not easily seen. Disclosing agent is useful coloring agent for visualizing dental plaque and increasing patient awareness of the importance effective plaque control. Chemical disclosing agent has several disadvantages so we need to develop natural disclosing agent. Anthocyanin is natural coloring that can be used to identify dental plaque that found in butterfly pea flower. This study aims to find butterfly pea extract can be an alternative disclosing agent for dental plaque identification. This is experimental research with post-test only one group design. The total sample was 16 peoples and selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The samples were given two times plaque examination and the result was recorded in the O’Leary plaque index. Result of research showed the average score of plaque examination with disclosing agent was 46.03% while the plaque examination score with butterfly extract was 32,21%. The data was analyzed using Mann-whitney test showed that value of significance 0,057 (p>0,05), which means there is no significant difference between the plaque examination using disclosing agent and butterfly pea extract. The butterfly pea extract can be used as an alternative for dental plaque identification.
