People consume energy drinks because can be used as an additional source of energy in their activities, however energy drinks have side effects causing erosion, potentially damaging the teeth, also reduce the flow rate and pH of saliva. Objective: to analyze the effect of consuming energy drinks on flow rate and salivary degree of acidity (pH). Method: quasi-experimental with two group pre-test and post-test design using purposive random sampling with inclusion and exclusion criteria. The sample was distinguished between male and female groups, totaled 10 subjects in each group. Saliva was collected before, 10th, and 30th minutes after consuming energy drinks, then measuring the value of the flow rate and pH of saliva using a scale and digital pH meter. Results: There was a significant difference in flow rate and salivary pH between before – 10th minutes and 10th – 30th minutes after consuming energy drinks (p < 0.05); there was no significant difference in flow rate and salivary pH between before – 30th minutes after consuming energy drinks in male and female (p > 0.05). There was difference in the flow rate and pH of saliva before, 10th, and 30th minutes after consuming energy drinks between male and female, and it shows that the values for male are higher than female. Conclusion: there was a decrease in flow rate and pH of saliva at the 10th minutes after consuming energy drinks, but increased back to baseline at the 30th minutes after consuming energy drinks in male and female. The flow rate and pH value of saliva before, 10th, and 30th minutes after consuming energy drinks were higher for male than for female.en_US
