The Effect of Activated Charcoal Suspension from Palm Oil Shells (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) on the Number of Streptococcus mutans on Thermoplastic Retainer xii + 55 pages Thermoplastic retainer is one of the devices used during the retention period, but its use can be an ideal place for the growth of microorganisms such as Streptococcus mutans. Activated charcoal is one of the natural ingredients that has an antibacterial effect. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in the mean number of colonies of Streptococcus mutans bacteria on thermoplastic retainers after being immersed in artificial saliva contaminated with Streptococcus mutans, 0.2% chlorhexidine, and 10% sterile activated charcoal suspension from oil palm shells (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) for 15 minutes. This research is a laboratory experimental research with Post Test Only Control Group Design. The sample of this study was a thermoplastic retainer in the form of a right lower jaw first molar tooth as many as 27 samples divided into 3 treatment groups. Calculation of the number of bacterial colonies using the TPC method and using a colony counter. The results of the One Way Anova test showed that there was a significant difference in all groups with the mean number of bacterial colonies in the group without treatment was 1863,444 ± 104,100 CFU, after immersed using 0.2% chlorhexidine was 38,333 ± 17,896 CFU, and 10% sterile activated charcoal suspension was 489,000 ± 81,263 CFU. The results of the Post Hoc LSD test, showed that there is a significant difference in the mean number of bacterial colonies between all treatment groups (p<0.05). The conclusion of this study is that 10% sterile activated charcoal suspension has antibacterial activity, however, it has a lower effectiveness compared to 0.2% chlorhexidine against Streptococcus mutans with immersion for 15 minutes.en_US
